HE is affectionately known as "Coach Eddie" within the World Bowls Community. A flamboyant person, who has witnessed the national team's rise firsthand.
Last year, he received a major national award in recognition of his achievements.
He was named the National Men's Coach of the Year at the 2023 National Sports Awards.
What more does Malaysia head coach Zuraidi Puteh hopes to achieve from the inaugural 'WORLD CUP 2025' in Kuala Lumpur (Nov 4-8)? Zuraidi speaks his mind in an exclusive interview with BOWLS ASIA.
Q. THE World's best are coming to our shores after 27 years. What are the expectations for the home team?
A. OF course, the best!
From humble beginnings, today we stand among the top 5 in the world.
The best of the best will be here.
Make no mistake, Malaysia are no pushovers.
We have had World No.1 player's - Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple (men) and Nor Farah Ain Abdullah (women) in our ranks. Many World Champions and success at Commonwealth Games.
Q. WHY has Malaysia consistently been a strong contender in World Championships?
A. OF course, the best!
No.1 - With the full backing of the Malaysia Lawn Bowls Federation (MLBF).
Also the National Sports Council (NSC), Youth and Sports Ministry and sponsors financial assistance.
Yes. We could not have done it alone. Funding is important for the players to gain vast experience and exposure from numerous training camps and international competitions held abroad.
Q. BOWLS Malaysia have aimed to deliver a gold medal and a top 3 finish from the total 7 events. Your comments?
A. ALL I can say is our players will not let the nation down.
As you can notice, I don't have to do much work or preparation with my players.
They bring a wealth of playing experience. The build-up process of the players took many years.
Muhammad Soufi Rusli was with me in the back-up squad 20 years ago. He is still hungry for success.
Many won World Championships and been on the podium many times.
This time is no different, and I believe they will deliver.
Q. WHAT is your philosophy in life or value that you hold dearest?
A. GIVING someone a second chance in life. That's what I learned from my late father 'Puteh bin Abdullah'.
Everyone deserves a second chance to prove they can be a better person.
A chance to make amends and begin anew.
There's no greater gift than having an impact on someone else's life for the better.
Q. HOW did your father's influence benefit you, both in your personal life and in your career as a coach?
A. IT taught me a strong work ethic, respect for rules, resilience and personal responsibility. My dad shaped me into the person I am today. A big inspiration to me.
I, too, came up the hard way. My dad was an ex-policeman. Instills disclipline but always gives me a second chance.
In our lifes ... we all learn from mistakes.
Q. WHAT are your plans for developing the next generation of players?
A. MY job is to produce World Champions - but not all can become one. What's more important is to transform them into better people.
And how they represent the sport to the world as ambassadors.
My greatest satisfaction comes from watching my players find success, both in the game and in life.
Q. APART from your late father, who were the other influential figures in your career?
A. A LOT of people.
I would like to thank the teachers, community leaders, and the Presidents of the Malaysia Lawn Bowls Federation (MLBF) who supported me throughout my journey in lawn bowls.
This is my way of returning the favor for giving me hope, feeling lost and drifting aimlessly in life as a young man.
